Frequently Asked Questions

Is this conference only for microbiology educators?

ASMCUE attendees teach allied health courses, biology and biotechnology course, and non-science general education majors. Demographics for ASMCUE 2007 show that the nearly 300 attendees come from a variety of institutions as well. With these statistics in mind, the ASMCUE Steering Committee works hard to ensure a diversity of topics across the biological sciences and session to improve teaching in all class settings.

I have never attended ASMCUE, what should I expect?

ASMCUE is a “no frills” meeting. To keep costs down attendees are housed in residence halls at the host institution. Meals are typically included in registration fees. The conference program is rigorous and sessions are held all day Friday through Sunday. The meeting offers many opportunities for networking with colleagues, meeting authors of the latest textbooks and presenting best practices. Each year, nearly half of ASMCUE attendees are attending the meeting for the first time.

Are Pre-conference Workshops available this year?
Pre-conference Workshops are no longer offered. In 2008 the ASMCUE Steering Committee expanded the Conference to include more offerings and an opening night reception on Thursday.

What is the difference between "Try Something New" and "Learn Something New" sessions?
Try Something New sessions focus on diin implementing innovative teaching approaches.

Learn Something New sessions focus on scientific content for the biological sciences.

Are travel awards available for attendees?
Attendees may apply for two travel award programs, the Early-Career Faculty Award available for faculty in their first 5 years of teaching and the Faculty Enhancement Program Travel Award available to faculty responsible for teaching underrepresented students. Applications for both programs are due March 20, 2009.

Are guests permitted at the conference?
Yes, the guest must be associated with a registered participant. Guest registration does not include access to conference sessions and materials, but guests are welcome at all meals and may stay in the residence hall with the fully registered participant. Guest registration is a flat fee and may not be reduced for shorter stays or a "no meals" option. There are also certain events for which guest may purchase tickets in advance.

What is included in the registration fee?
Attendees have several choices when registering. The main two options are the housing and non-housing option. Those selecting the housing option will be placed in the residence hall on the hosting campus. The housing option also includes meals and materials. Attendees selecting the non-housing option must find their own lodging. The fee includes meals and materials only.

Is one-day registration available?
No, single-day conference registration is not available. The full conference registration fee must be paid in order to attend any of the sessions and meals.
