Faculty Enhancement Program Travel Award

 

Application Deadline:  February 8, 2011

 

Program Description

The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) offers a faculty enhancement program to increase faculty's knowledge and skills in the microbiological sciences.  A second goal of the program is to increase participation from a larger group of biology faculty to work closely with ASM to improve undergraduate microbiology in the 21st century.

 

The program supports faculty who are responsible for teaching microbiology at community colleges or institutions with significant numbers of minority students to become an ASM member and attend the annual ASMCUE.  The award is a $700 travel subsidy presented upon completion of travel and submission of receipts for ASMCUE travel, lodging, and/or registration expenses.  Recipients also receive a one-year complimentary membership in the ASM (value of $61).

 

Eligibility

Candidates must:  

  • Be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. permanent resident
  • Teach an undergraduate microbiology course on a regular basis at an accredited institution of higher education
  • Have a full-time appointment at a 2 year college OR at a 4 year institution of higher education
  • Not be a recipient of substantial federal funding or any other ASM faculty enhancement or travel award
  • Be first-time attendees to ASMCUE

Criteria for Selection

Candidates should document or demonstrate:

  • Number and type of students who will benefit from this program
  • Number of years elapsed since applicant's formal training in microbiology
  • Commitment to improve teaching and to participate in education and outreach programs in the future
  • Leadership potential
  • Administration's commitment to further training, outreach and leadership
  • Commitment to be involved in ASM

 

Application Procedure

To apply for a 2011 Faculty Enhancement Program Award, complete the application and submit with all required materials following the instructions outlined on the Application Form.  The Application Deadline is Tuesday, February 8, 2011.

Application packet should include:

  • Current curriculum vitae of not more than two pages
  • One-paragraph description of your institution, indicating size, geographic location (urban or rural) and the makeup of the student and faculty populations
  • List of teaching history for the last five years (institution, names of courses, dates, 
  • enrollment)
  • Two-page statement that describes:
    • The challenges you face in remaining current in microbiology and microbiology education
    • What you hope to gain from the program, and how the program will benefit you, your students, and your institution
    • What your future plans are with regard to serving students, faculty, your community, and the profession
    • Your leadership roles in educational, professional, and community activities
    • Campus-based and/or other funding sources
  • Letter of recommendation from your department chair or dean addressing your commitment to education and the institution's commitment to your participation in this program.
