Program Description
The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) offers travel awards to increase the participation of early-career undergraduate faculty, post-doctoral scientists or senior level graduate students interested in teaching careers in ASM's Conference for Undergraduate Educators (ASMCUE).
The award is a $750 travel subsidy presented upon completion of travel and submission of receipts for ASMCUE travel, lodging, and/or registration expenses. Eligibility requirements are listed for two tracks of awardees. Preference is given for applicants who have not been previously funded.
Early-Career Travel Award for senior level graduate students, post-doctoral candidates and faculty teaching for less than three years:
Eligibility
- Be an active ASM member
- Teach an undergraduate microbiology course or participates in outreach activities related to microbiology
- Have an interest in pursuing a teaching career at an undergraduate institution
- Be in their first three years of teaching
- Not be a recipient of substantial federal funding or any other ASM faculty enhancement or travel award
Criteria for Selection
- Significance of teaching experience and/or outreach activities
- Statement of teaching philosophy
- Potential to contribute and lead
- Commitment to education
Application packet should include:
- Curriculum vitae
- One-page statement describing what you hope to gain by participating in ASMCUE
- One-page statement describing your teaching philosophy or current approach to teaching
- List of previous experience working with students
- Desciption of your campus-based and/or other funding sources
- Letter of recommendation from an appropriate college or university official (department chair, dean, advisor or administrator) attesting to the applicant's demonstrated commitment and contribution to microbiology education
Early-Career Travel Award for faculty teaching between four to five years:
Eligibility
- Be an active ASM member
- Present an abstract that has been accepted for the ASMCUE
- Have a full-time appointment at a 2 year college OR at a 4 year institution
- Teach an undergraduate microbiology course on a regular basis

- Significance and originality of abstract
- Teaching excellence
- Potential to contribute and lead
- Commitment to education
Application Procedure
To apply for a ASMCUE 2011 Early-Career Travel Award , complete the application and submit with all required materials following the instructions outlined on the Application Form. The Application Deadline is Tuesday, February 8, 2011.
